Overcoming the Struggles of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder that affects the reproductive and hormonal health of women worldwide. According to the CDC, it is estimated to affect over 10 million women in the United States alone. PCOS can cause a variety of symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, difficulty conceiving, cystic acne and weight gain. Despite these symptoms, people living with PCOS can still lead full, healthy lives with the right treatment and coping strategies.

The first step to overcoming PCOS is working closely with a healthcare professional. Seeking out a physician who is knowledgeable in PCOS and other reproductive disorders is essential in getting the diagnosis and individualized treatment plan needed to manage PCOS and its symptoms. PCOS can be managed through lifestyle and dietary changes, supplements, and/or hormonal medications. Eating a balanced diet that is lower in carbohydrates and maintaining a healthy body weight can greatly improve symptoms, such as reducing hirsutism (excess facial hair) and improving insulin sensitivity. Additionally, hormonal birth control or other medications may be prescribed to help regulate menstrual cycles, or fertility treatments may be suggested for those hoping to conceive. Making sure to have all available resources is crucial, as PCOS can be challenging to treat, and it is important to find the right combination of techniques and treatments to best manage the syndrome.

Having a strong support network is also key in dealing with PCOS. While family, friends, and other forms of support can be incredibly helpful, it is also beneficial to seek out a mental health professional to assist in dealing with the psychological and emotional effects of PCOS. A mental health professional can provide techniques to cope with the physical, emotional and mental stress that may come with having PCOS, and offer support groups to help feel connected and accepted. Additionally, joining online support groups with other people living with PCOS can help work through the struggles and make connections to find advice and comfort.

In the end, it is important to remember that although PCOS may present a difficult road, it is not impossible to cope with. With the proper knowledge, expertise, strategies, and support system in place, life with PCOS is manageable and can lead to a happy and healthy lifestyle.
