Understanding Hemorrhoids: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Posted on February 15, 2023Updated on February 15, 2023by Shena MartinCategories:Blog

Hemorrhoids, also referred to as piles, is a common medical condition that affects millions of individuals around the world. A hemorrhoid is an enlarged vein in the rectum and anus area. In most cases, hemorrhoids result from constant straining during bowel movements, due to pregnancy, or a number of other causes.

An individual with hemorrhoids may experience a number of symptoms such as pain when sitting, itching or irritation near the anus area, bleeding from the rectum after a bowel movement, a lump or swelling near the anus that is painful or sensitive, and mucus discharge from the rectum. Other symptoms may include fever, fatigue, or even small amounts of fecal matter in the underwear. If a person does not seek treatment for hemorrhoids, these symptoms can become painful or bothersome and can lead to further health complication.

The causes of hemorrhoids can include things such as constipation, infrequent and ineffective bowel movement, straining during bowel movements, a low-fiber diet, prolonged sitting, lack of exercise, aging, pregnancy, genetics, and anal intercourse.

In order to treat and prevent hemorrhoids, there are various methods that can be used. Initially, a person should make dietary changes such as increasing their fiber intake and drinking eight glasses of water per day. These changes help to ensure that stool is easier to pass and more regular. It is important to keep up with exercise and to avoid sitting down for an extended period of time.

For other cases, a doctor may recommend a variety of treatments such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, infrared coagulation, or surgery. These methods can be used to remove painful and swollen veins. In some cases, topical or oral medications may be prescribed to reduce swelling and alleviate pain.

In conclusion, hemorrhoids are a common medical condition that is caused by straining during bowel movements, pregnancy or other activities. Individuals who experience hemorrhoids may experience a range of symptoms. In order to treat and prevent hemorrhoids, dietary changes, exercise, and medical treatments are necessary.
