The amount of calories one consumes plays an integral part in achieving and maintaining a healthy body and weight. Depending on age and weight, the amount of calories one should consume fluctuates accordingly. Note that, one has to also take into consideration the level of daily activities engaged in when making a decision about this matter. This blog outlines the amount of calories that should be consumed for age and weight, and encourages individuals to speak to a qualified professional for further advice.

For children, their calorie needs vary from age to age and are influenced by their metabolic rate and level of physical activity. Between the ages of two to three, children typically require 1,000 to 1,400 calories a day. As they age, their calorie needs increase until they reach peak physical growth at the age of 11-14. This can result in energy needs of 1,400 to 2,200 calories per day. After the age of 14, calorie needs start to decline and become stable around the ages of 18-25. At this age, roughly 2,000 calories a day are usually needed.

For adults between the ages of 18-25, the basic amount of calories to consume is 2,000. However, this value fluctuates depending on their level of physical activity and their general goals. Generally, a person looking to maintain their weight would require 2,000-2,400 calories a day, whereas a person looking to lose weight would require 1,500-2,000 calories a day. For those looking to gain weight, typically 2,400-3,000 calories a day are needed.

The caloric needs of a person also vary depending on their physical size. Height and weight come into play when determining how many calories to consume. Generally speaking, the heavier person requires more calories, while a person of smaller size requires less. It’s important to note that these suggestions are based on the average sizes of the average individual and may not be the same for everyone. Therefore, it is recommended that one speaks to a qualified doctor or nutritionist for tailored advice.

All in all, when considering age, weight and physical activity, it is important to recognize that caloric needs can vary drastically between individuals. Therefore it is important to take into consideration one’s age, weight and physical activity when determining an ideal caloric intake. Of course, it is always recommended to seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional when attempting to adjust or maintain a healthy weight.
